Freerslev Kotel is a farm with 330 meat breed cattle. The farm is owned and run by Erik and Inge, who live on the farm. Our 5 children are either studying or working and living in their own homes.
THE COWS
The farm used to be a dairy farm with 350 Jersey milking cows. Now the livestock consist of meat cattle – they are cross breed between Jersey, Danish Bluewhite and Angus. The next generations of crossbreeds are then crossed with Angus which gives a magnificent meat flavour and structure. The herds are kept free range in stables at winter time. They have constant access till fodder, water and spaces for ruminating and rest. Throughout the summer the animals are on pasture – except for the bulls. The grazing season in Denmark is typically from May to October (weather dependent)
FODDER
The cows are fed a special composed fodder mixture. The cow mixture is made out of sweet corn sillage, corn, straw, hay, rape and vitamins and minerals. In addition to that we also mix in 4 ton each day of greens and fruits which are waste from a production of fruit- and vegetable juice and convinience salat - all to human consumption. Twice a week 25-30 tons of greens are delivered to the farm at no cost for the producers and at no cost for us. Waste becomes animal fodder in a substainable way. For the same reason we use mask from a nearby brewerage to mix in the fodder - waste turned into good fodder for cows.
All in all 9,5 tons of fodder is mixed – and consumed – each day in the winter - in the summer it is less as most af the the animals are on pasture.
CROPS
Freerslev Kotel is nearly self-sufficient with regards to producing food for the animals. 90 hectare of land is owned by the farm. Further 210 hectare land are leased. Some of it is positioned close to the farm and some a bit further away (max 10km)
In 2021rape was grown on 27% of 300 hectares, barley, oat and wheat was grown on 33% af the land and 40% of the yield was grass for harvesting and for pasture. Rape is used for oilproduction and the wheat are used for for bread flour. The barley is used for beer making, oat are used for porridge oats and all surplus grains are used for fodder. 50 % of the land is grown ecological.
